From trusted Telco to trailblazing TechCo

VodaPay, South Africa

Fintech

Telco giant Vodacom saw a problem with payments in South Africa. With more than 10 million unbanked, a majority of the population are still using mainly cash, and access to banking services is a daily challenge. This gave birth to Vodacom Financial and Digital Lifestyle Services, a growing fintech within the telco. In 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation identified a big barrier to how people can use their money - but also a huge opportunity to solve it. Lucky Beard worked closely with Vodacom, and payment platform Alipay, to create VodaPay.

A super app where customers can make bill payments like; electricity and DStv, send and receive money without a bank account, and have access to a digital mall featuring 100s of mini apps with popular brands, customers can even get vouchers and cash advances. Vodapay is South Africa’s first true super app.

Executing against this North Star strategy in alignment with brand, and product design was no easy task. We collaborated with dev teams to ensure seamless integration across all platforms and helped design a go-to-market strategy along with creative communications.

VodaPay was named the No.1 app downloaded in South Africa in its first month of launch to SA. Vodacom Financial and Digital Lifestyle Services is now set to be one of Africa's fastest growing FinTechs.

  • The launch of VodaPay was one of the most pivotal projects for Vodacom Financial and Digital Lifestyle Services. Therefore we needed to partner with an agency that was up for the challenge, Lucky Beard was exactly for us! Their creative flare, solution-focussed attitude, fast response rate and their ability to provide in-depth knowledge, based on detailed research, were all key contributors to our partnership being a great success.
