Championing character through culturally grounded storytelling
Our production partner, 10th Street Stories, partnered with Retroviral and Ryobi to create Map1mp1, a long-form documentary that tells the story of Makazole Mapimpi’s journey from rural beginnings to Rugby World Cup champion.
Our approach centred on crafting an authentic, emotionally resonant narrative that reflects both the individual and the broader South African context. Through cinematic storytelling, we captured the contrast between the rural landscapes of Twecu and the urban environments that shaped his rise, grounding the story in a strong sense of place.
Narrated by award-winning Xhosa sports journalist Sibusiso Mjekeliso, the film offers an intimate and layered perspective on the challenges Mapimpi overcame and the people who influenced his journey. Every element, from scripting to visual execution, was designed to highlight the rawness, resilience and humanity at the core of his story.
More than a sports documentary, Map1mp1 positions Mapimpi as a symbol of hope and possibility, showing how a single moment can inspire a generation.
The result is a powerful, purpose-driven film that strengthens Ryobi’s brand through meaningful storytelling and deep cultural connection.
